2008/2009
Marketing Season.
Seed
cotton purchases for the WCGA started on mid June. Forty
two (42) companies both local and international registered
with TCB to purchase the crop from the farmers. By the
end of last week i.e. 17th October 2008 a total of 359,588
tons of seed cotton had been purchased and transported
to various ginneries, purchases and transportation of
seed cotton is going on in some few areas of WCGA.
(see the table below). However seed
cotton procurement in Eastern Cotton Growing Areas (ECGA)
started late September but very little cotton has been
purchased due to lack of enough buyers. Few companies
registered to buy the crop though due to low production.
Details
on purchases by each company.
Cotton
producer price started at Tshs 400/= per Kg of seed cotton
(i.e. 16th June 2008) but up to last week price has increased
up to Tshs 500/= per Kg of seed cotton.
Last
season 2007/08 production was projected at 300,000 metric
tons of seed cotton but at the turn of the season only
200,665 metric tons could be achieved. Low production
was attributed to mainly by drought that affected cotton
producing areas during cotton sowing season.

the last fifteen years production of cotton in Tanzania
has been rising and falling due to different contributing
factors mainly weather changes, poor farming practices
and fluctuation in producer
price. Production

Cotton
purchases and processing 2006/07 season.
Production
decline from 374,818 tons of seed cotton last season to
less than 129,000 tons of seed cotton this season mostly
due to drought that affected the entire cotton producing
area in the country. The scarcity of cotton was however
a blessing to producers because the competition led to
increase in producer price. Compared with last season
producer price increase by over 50% from Tshs 250 last
season to 450 per kilogram of seed cotton this season.
